「第三市場」在日治時期民國11年(大政11年)於櫻町開設，位於火車站西南側不遠處，之後於民國21年移至敷島町，也就是臺中市第三市場現址。第三市場最早期原本是零星農民聚集販賣蔬菜及山產，後來因人潮匯聚逐漸形成市集。
