2005 年11 月26 日「西拉雅國家風景區管理處」誕生，設置於臺南市白河區，成為交通部觀光局協助地方發展觀光的第13 個「幫手」，陸續展開一系列「鄉村
之旅」活動，規劃追求「健康、輕鬆、慢活」的人文之旅，誠摯期盼國內外嘉賓們蒞臨遨遊。
由於涵蓋南部五大水庫，風景區成立之初曾草擬為「五庫風景特定區」，後來發現這裡是南島語族原住民平埔族之「西拉雅」族的重要居住地，為突顯本區的歷
史人文特色，因此以「西拉雅」族稱命名為「西拉雅國家風景區」。
